Fun Things To Do In Salida

The Ghost And Murder Tour

With a creepy history and lots of spooky myths and legends, Salida is the perfect place for anyone that wants a fright!

One of the best ways to learn about the ghostly goings-on of this quaint town is to take the Ghost and Murder Tour. Operated by Steve’s Original Salida Walking Tours, this is a brilliant evening activity that’s sure to give you chills.

Not only will your guide give you plenty of scary tales but you’ll also learn about the grisly murders of days gone by, passing old brothels and saloons. But be careful, you never know when a spirit might pass by!

Skiing On Monarch Mountain

When you’re in the mountains, it would be a crime not to take part in some snow sports and skiing on Monarch Mountain is one of the greatest activities to do in Salida.

With tubing, skiing, terrain, parks and much more, the whole family can enjoy a day or a vacation at the Monarch Mountain Ski Resort. They even offer skiing lessons if you’re totally new to the sport.

After a day on the slopes, you can relax and unwind at one of the four resort restaurants. And, if you don’t want to stop, there’s even a burrito stand where you can pick up a snack on the go.

White Water Rafting Fun in Salida

With the Arkansas River flowing right through Salida, it’s a great opportunity to get out onto the water. If it’s fun and adventure you’re looking for then why not try your hand at white water rafting?

There are lots of river outfitters offering activities for people of all skill levels including Salida River Adventures which is one of the most reputable centers in the area. You’ll not only have the opportunity to experience the fast flowing waters but they even offer overnight trips for an immersive adventure.

Brown’s Canyon is one of the best places for white water rafting in Salida and provides you with the perfect blend of adventure and mind blowing scenery.

Salida Wine Tasting

For the grown ups, there’s plenty to get excited about when it comes to wine tasting in Salida with lots of wineries and vineyards that are waiting to welcome you.

Whether you’re a red or a white lover, the drinks will be flowing at the many wineries. One of the most well-loved is the Mountain Spirit Winery located in the high country, boasting amazing mountain views.

As well as wine tasting, they offer a delicious gourmet snack menu and even have garden games like corn hole and lawn darts.

Hallmark Ranch Alpacas

For kids (and adults) that love animals, Hallmark Ranch Alpacas will be a real treat. What’s more, the tour of the ranch only takes an hour so it’s perfect for younger kids who won’t hold their attention for long.

This family-run ranch is well known for taking excellent care of its animals and when visiting, you’ll be treated to a meet and greet with these friendly alpacas. Plus, it’s a great way to combine fun and education as your little adventurers will learn lots about these beautiful creatures.

There’s even an on-site alpaca store where you can pick up a keepsake to remember your visit and help support the continued running of the ranch.

Captain Zipline Aerial Adventure Park

Spending time outdoors is a must when visiting Salida and what better way to make the most of your adventure than visiting the Captain Zipline Aerial Adventure Park?

This is a fantastic day out for families but is also a great option for things like bachelor parties and birthdays if the adults are looking for something unique to keep them entertained.

With seven aerial courses to choose from, there’s something for every skill level including the sunset zipline tour and the Lost Canyon zipline. So reputable is this center that it’s even won Traveller’s Choice Awards!

Note that some activities are age restricted so it’s best  to check out the FAQs page on the website before booking.

Hot Springs Aquatic Center in Salida

Salida is known for its geothermal activity and there are plenty of hot springs to choose from (check out my full guide on Salida hot springs here.)

If there was one hot spring that I’d recommend for a fun afternoon out, it would be the Hot Springs Aquatic Center which offers everything from open swimming to fitness classes and even the chance to hire your own private relaxation pool.

This is one of the biggest indoor hot springs in the entire US and naturally, it can get rather busy. This means that there can sometimes be a wait to get in but those warm, soothing waters are well worth it!

If you’re looking for a short hike then I’d recommend the Waterdog Lakes Trail or the Old Monarch Pass Loop, the latter being more suitable for beginners.

For more experienced hikers and those that fancy a multi-day adventure then why not give the North Backbone Trail or the Mount Shavano Trail a try?
